11.21.2007
- Leading velodrome architect Peter Junek has submitted a proposal for the construction of a portable velodrome for the Pavillon Building at the State Fair Grounds in Salem, Oregon. His proposal will be put together with a proposal for a Six Day race at the State Fair during the last week in August 2008. OBRA is also proposing a 5-6 date racing series leading up to US Elite National Championships and following in preparation for the first World Cup event. The goal will be to attract top riders from North America for the largest single series payday for track cyclists in the United States. The full proposal will be submitted to Tim Woods, Director of Oregon State Parks, the week of November 26, 2007. Following the submission of the document, Portland Velodrome and OBRA officials will be meeting with Mr. Woods to review the proposal and discuss the next steps.

- World famous velodrome architect Peter Junek will visit Oregon Sept. 10th to meet with State Parks Director Tim Wood, our committee, and sponsors of Senate Bill 926 to discuss building a portable track to be used at the State Fairgrounds in 2008. The goal will be to have our first indoor track as well as establish guidelines for construction of wood tracks in multiple locations in Oregon.

- The Portland track racing season has started, with 30 to 60 people racing three nights per week, and open training sessions every day. The big event of the summer starts July 6th: The Alpenrose Challenge will attract elite cyclists from across North America for three days of racing.

- The Friends of PIR are interested in making PIR a world class bike racing venue. Central to this will be a new velodrome. If we can put together a funding package, this could be the new home of track racing in Portland. Creation of this venue would make Portland the bike racing capital of the United States.

- Senate Bill 926 is currently stalled on the desk of the Ways and Means Co-Chairs Rep. Mary Nolan and Sen. Kurt Schrader. The comment from Rep. Nolan is that the funding source, Measure 66 money, should only be used for State Parks. Measure 66 clearly states that the money is to be used for recreation areas and state parks. It is a very narrow view, especially in light of a record year for funding. Rep. Nolan has stated she has not heard from enough people that want the bill to pass. Please contact Rep. Nolan, Sen. Schrader and your own local legislators to tell them how you feel.

- Portland Velodrome Project website goes live! The Portland Velodrome Project website is now online and running. Readers can use this site to keep track of the progress of this exciting new addition to the Northwest Bicycle Racing scene.

to the Portland Velodrome Project.
